Curriculum

Our school teaches Traditional Chinese characters and Chinese phonetic alphabet - Zhu Ying Fu Hao. We offer Preschool Class, Phonetic Class (Grade 0) and Grade 1 to 10.
Starting from 2024, we also offer a new course “Chinese Culture & Language CLC" teaching Traditional Chinese characters with the Pinyin system.

9 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. on Saturdays
9 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. (three 40-minute classes with two 20-minute break) for Pre-school classes. 

Requirements for Preschool and Phonetic New Students
1. Minimum age for Preschool Class must be at least 3 by 8/31 and potty-trained. 
2. Minimum age for Phonetic Class must be at least 4 by 8/31.
3. Must also submit a copy of birth certificate or passport along with the registration forms.

Registration procedure
•   Returning Families (on-site or mail-in registration)
  1. Pick up the registration package at the office from 3/2/24.
  2. On-site registration will be accepted at the office on following dates/time:  3/9/24 to 4/27/24 from 9:30am - 11:30am. Be sure to confirm and update your family and student information and sign the registration form as well as write down your Family ID for future volunteer service sign-up.
  3. Mail-in registration will be accepted from 4/28/24 to 8/17/24. No registration by telephone.
  4. Enrollment for the returning students is guaranteed if registered by 4/27/24.
•   New Families 
  1. Complete and print out the online registration.
  2. On-site registration & new family interview are arranged on 4/20/24 and 4/27/24 from 9:30am - 11:30am at Interlake High School. Students should be accompanied by one parent who speaks Mandarin Chinese (if any).
  3. Families who cannot come on those two days should mail in registration form and documents between 4/28/24 to 8/17/24. Interview will be scheduled later. Registration will stop when our classes are full.
  4. No registration by telephone.
The following items are required for on-site registration. Incomplete submission will not be accepted for registration. Please read carefully.
  1. Registration form (paper copy):
    1. Returning Families - Registration Package. For new student from a current family, add the new student's information on the family's registration form
    2. New Families -- Complete and print out the online registration form.
  2. A copy of birth certificate or passport (including returning families) for preschool/phonetics classes and new student registration
  3. One check with the correct total payment or a receipt of Zelle transaction (see "Fees" for detail)

Fees
  1. Write ONE check or pay via Zelle for the total amount: Annual Tuition + Other Fees
  2. Annual Tuition (per student): $400 for Preschool to 10th grade
  3. Other Fees ($180 per family) include: 
    1. Registration Processing $20
    2. PTA Membership $10
    3. Volunteer Service Deposit $150
  4. Sibling Discount: If there is more than one child enrolled in our school from the same family, each additional sibling will receive a $10 tuition discount. 
  5. Returning Family Discount: A $20 discount applies to each returning student enrolled by 3/30/2024 (by stamped postage date). 
  6. For new family/student registration, tuition must be paid in full amount and not eligible for a $20 discount.
  7. New course "Chinese Language & Culture (CLC)" for the 2024-25 academic year is open to 10-12 year old students with language backgrounds. The course focuses on using the pinyin system to help students learn Chinese pronunciation and introduce various cultural activities to enhance students' interest in language learning. The tuition fee for "Everyday Chinese CSL" is $500, plus other fees (see #3).

Parent Volunteer Service and Volunteer Service Guarantee Deposit 

  1. The $150 deposit will be refunded towards the end of school year for families that provide at least 10 hours of volunteer service.
    - All families are responsible for signing up volunteer service jobs online via SignUp Genius once enrolled.
    - All time slots requiring volunteers will be available before school starts in September until the 4th week of the new school year.
  2. Volunteer jobs and time slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Class placement and Notification
1. Students are placed by the school administration based on class size and student age.
2. New students are accepted and placed (if accepted) by filling available vacancies.
3. Information regarding class assignment and other pertinent details will be mailed out by the end of August.

Class Transfer Request within SCS
Class transfer requests must be submitted in writing by parent(s) with appropriate reasons. Requests will only be granted under the principal, vice principal, registrar and other pertinent school administrators’ approval. Transfer must be completed within three weeks after school starts. 

Transfer students
1. Students transferring from other Chinese schools or have been home-schooled in Chinese will need to take the placement test. 
2. No transfer students will be accepted after the 4th week of school year, except the following conditions:

1)    Recently moved to Seattle area

2)    Interviewed and accepted by the school staff

3)    Space availability

4)    Consent from the class teacher

3. Students who complete transfer process before the First Semester shall pay full amount of tuition and fees. Those who complete transfer process after the end of the First semester shall pay 50% of tuition and full amount of other fees. Please refer to “Fees” section above for more details. If students later decide to withdraw, it will be processed based on school’s “Withdrawal & Refund” policy.


Withdrawal & refund
Tuition refund policy and schedule for withdrawal: 
1. $20 registration fee is not refundable.
2. Return the textbook set unmarked. If the textbook / practice book are marked, parents need to pay for the textbook fee and may keep the textbook set.

Procedures for Withdrawal and Refund Request
1. Contact the school office or download the withdrawal form from the school website 
2. Complete the withdrawal form and attach a self-addressed stamped envelope. Then send the completed withdrawal form along with the return envelope to: Seattle Chinese School. PO Box 50481, Bellevue, WA 98015 
3. Please ensure the mailing address on the return envelope is accurate. accurate. School Treasurer will mail out the check in the return envelope provided. If for any reason, the family does not receive the mail, the family needs to pay $30 to stop payment of the issued check before School Treasurer can re-issue another check.
