Seattle Chinese School (SCS) was founded in 1966. At the time, it was under the
organization of the Seattle Chinese Women’s
Club. The SCS trade name was
registered with the Washington State Government in 1974. It was the earliest Chinese school
established in the Seattle metropolitan area. The SCS is a self-supporting, non-profit
organization. Its purpose is to
enhance the education of the Chinese language and culture for overseas
Chinese. The SCS has no political
or religious affiliations.
Through its years of existence, the SCS’
primary goal has been to raise the awareness of overseas Chinese of their own
ancestral roots. The volunteer
school administrators and teachers have always strived to plant the seeds of
the Chinese culture in our hearts by offering quality Chinese education. The SCS organizational chart has gone through several
changes since its inception. Currently, the SCS consists of a Board of
Directors (seven members), an Advisory Committee (comprised of a team of
community leaders), the school administration staff (the school Principal,
two Assistant-Principals, Deans of:
Curriculum, Faculty, Extra-curricular Activities, Information System,
Registration, Operations, Finance, Library, Folk Arts and Craft ) and the Parent Teacher Association. The school operates smoothly with the
dedicated efforts of all its volunteers.
All the administrative staff members are parent-volunteer who received
no monetary compensation. All
teachers are hired by the SCS with minimum part-time pay. The number of students grew
steadily through the years, which necessitated the move to a bigger and better campus. The SCS is
now located at Interlake High School, Bellevue School District, by the
foothills of Somerset near Factoria.
As of the school year 2004 – 2005 there were
over 360 students enrolled in eleven school-grades, with ages ranging from 6
through 18. Classes are held
between 9 am to noon, every Saturday during the regular school year. The SCS curriculum utilizes textbooks recommended by the
Overseas Chinese (Taiwan) Affairs Commission.
Our curriculum also includes classes in Folk arts and Cultural
activities. In addition to
classroom teaching, SCS also encourages student participation in the Chinese
summer camps, Chinese culture and traditional art contests held by the
Pacific Northwest Chinese School Association. During school time parents are
encouraged to participate in a wide selection of activities such as: Oriental Flower Arrangement, Chinese
Calligraphy, Tai Chi and Folk Dance.
These classes are held on campus and taught by dedicated teachers,
many of who are parents with children attending our school. Through the years, the SCS has made great progress.
This was made possible by the dedicated teamwork between the school staff,
the students and their families.
Currently the administrators at SCS include Dr. Jay Lin, Chairperson
of the Board of Directors, and Mrs. Judy Yu, Principal of the SCS. The SCS holds annual fundraising
drives. Every year the Community
Donation program raises funds for the Bellevue School Foundation, the Tyee
Middle School as well as the Cultural Exchange (CE) program. The CE program sponsors teachers from
the local public schools and sends them on a 2-week trip to visit China, Hong
Kong and Taiwan with the goal of increasing teachers’
understanding of Chinese culture.
We also offer opportunities for our alumni students to come back and
help in the classrooms as teacher’s assistants (TAs),
earning community service hours, which are recognized by their public high
schools. It is with great pride
that we strive to give back to the community where we reside, raise the
awareness of Chinese culture, and to offer quality education of the Chinese
language and arts to the next generation.
